The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority is a Nodal Authority constituted as a statutory body in March 1999 under Section 6 of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987. The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority Rules, 1998 and Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (Transaction of Business and other Provisions) govern the functioning of this Authority. The Nagaland State Legal Services Authority as described in the Act holds the responsibility for protection of the weaker sections and safeguarding the rights of the marginalized in the context of ‘Access to Justice for all’. Nagaland State Legal Services Authority is headed by the Hon’ble Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court as Patron-in-Chief and the Hon’ble Executive Chairman who is a Judge of the Gauhati High Court, functioning under the control of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
The District Legal Services Authority was constituted on March 2001 under Section 9 of the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 read with Rule 10 of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (Amendment) Act, 1994.
There are 11 District Legal Services Authorities functioning under the Nagaland State legal Services Authority. Each District Legal Services Authorities are attached to the District Court Building in the respective District Headquarter. 11 Front Offices are setup and functioning which are attached to the District Court Building. 132 Legal services clinics are established and functioning across the states in Villages, community centres, schools, colleges and Jails. A total of 110 Legal literacy clubs are opened in various Schools & colleges spreading throughout the State. A common Plan of Action is bought out annually to execute the Legal Services Programmes, Policies, functions, fulfilment of constitutional obligations and statutory provisions.
