This video produced by the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) is part of an audio-visual series for mass awareness on the nationwide Gender Campaign organized by the Ministry of Rural Development (DAY-NRLM), GoI. The video highlights a poem written by a young school boy that captures the plight of women and hope for change. It also represents the gender-sensitivity of men or boys that is much needed to address issues of gender discrimination or gender-based violence.

"Transform rural poor youth into an economically independent and globally relevant workforce"

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) aims to skill rural youth who are poor and provide them with jobs having regular monthly wages or above the minimum wages. It is one of the cluster of initiatives of the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India that seeks to promote rural livelihoods. It is a part of the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) - the Mission for poverty reduction called Aajeevika. The scheme will benefit more than 55 million poor rural youth who are ready to be skilled by providing sustainable employment.

Nagaland Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) is present in 1241 Villages under the 74 RD Blocks across 11 Districts. The Mission Management Units at the State, Districts and Blocks are supported by more than 600 development professionals. NSRLM has a customized Human Resource policy of recruiting only indigenous tribe of the representative Districts. Over the last 8 years, the State Mission has been able to develop 1963 village based Community Cadres (CCs). Accordingly, as on January 2020, 110788 rural Households have been mobilized into 12003 Self Help Groups (SHG) and their 716 Village Level Organizations (VLO), and 22 Cluster Level Federations (CLF).

In the wake of the Novel Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), NSRLM has been entrusted with the task of building community resilience through SHG networks, by the State Government, for ‘Community Based Preparedness and Response’ in partnership with Health & Family Welfare Department (F&FW) and Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA).

Nagaland Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) is a registered Society under Society Registration Act, 1860 and Nagaland Societies Registration (Nagaland Third Amendment) Act, 2008 (Act No.1 of 2009), established by the Rural Development Department, Government of Nagaland on 13th September 2012, for implementation of ‘Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM)’ in the State.  DAY-NRLM is a poverty alleviation programme implemented by Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India. The programme aims to organize the poor into ‘Institutions of the Poor (Self Help Groups and their Federations) and make them capable for self-employment. NSRLM is committed to foster social and economic empowerment of the rural poor through the community institutions, and empower local changemakers.

NSRLM, today, is present in 1241 Villages under the 74 RD Blocks across 11 Districts. The Mission Management Units at the State, Districts and Blocks are supported by more than 600 development professionals. Along with the increase in economic gains, the State Mission has observed tremendous participation and contribution from the community members towards social cause. Literate SHG members are teaching illiterate members how to write and sign their name; community to community learning through cross-learning visits within the SHGs/Villages/Blocks/Districts; free basic computer application trainings to SHG members and school drop-out youths; environmental initiatives like planting trees, clearing the village area, and cleaning drives; caring for the aged; financial assistance to vulnerable members; assistance in constructing thatch house to poor household in the village; free tuition, books, stationery to poor students in the village; financial assistance to church and other social development bodies within the village; to name some few. 

The State Mission believes that sustainable change in the living standards of the rural populace will be substantial only with the joint efforts of all the stakeholders working with renewed commitment toward inclusive socio-eco development in the State.
