Sericulture department was functioning as a wing under the Industries and Commerce department till the end of 7th five year plan. Then on realizing the potentialities for economic uplipftment and employment generation through its different stages of activities, the Department has bifurcated into a separate directorate with effect from 1st June 1988. Thus a milestone in the history of Sericulture existence in the state was created. The Department of Sericulture is headed by the Director who is assisted by Addl. Director, two Jt. Director, four Dy. Director and Seri Officer/District Seri Officer/Asst. Seri Officer posted in eleven districts for the development of Sericulture in the State. Presently, the Department has total strength of 274 regular employees of regular employees including ministerial and Grade-IV employees. In the Secretariate, Dept. is headed by Secretary, one Jt.Secy., two Dy. Secy. and one S.O. and one J.S.O. in the Department.
Considering the important part played in the field of generating sustainable economic growth and self-employment through Sericulture, the Department has given special emphasis on implementing income generating schemes and also creating infrastructures for the rural educated people of the state through centrally and state sponsored schemes.
Objectives:
- To introduce the latest modern technology for higher productivity and profitability.
- To introduce the high yielding varieties of silkworm seeds and host plants for higher productivity.
- To introduce the concept of commercialization.
- To popularize sericulture in rural areas, generate self employment opportunities and uplift rural economy through implementation of various developmental schemes.
- To improve the economy of farmers and sustainability through sericulture.
Mission Statement:
- Creation of infrastructural facilities, technical support, production of Dfls(disease free layings) and supply of seeds, saplings/seedling and cuttings.
- To promote latest technology of Silkworm rearing, spinning/reeling and weaving.
- Development of mulberry silk industry.
- To provide opportunities to women folk through sericulture.
- To facilitate marketing of sericulture products.
- To make sericulture a cottage industry and fulltime occupation.
